Hey you Pavlov dog! Sit up straight and pay attention… NOW!

Has anyone ever addressed you in this manner before? If literally, I bet they haven’t. But though you may not be aware of it now, my guess is that you’ve received this message on a pretty regular basis…

First things first though.

I need to make sure you understand what I mean with “Pavlov Dog”. If you don’t, please read this entry on the Wikipedia about Pavlov and his dogs first:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ivan_Pavlov

On this page you can read:

Pavlov’s research on conditional reflexes greatly influenced not only science, but also popular culture. The phrase “Pavlov’s dog” is often used to describe someone who merely reacts to a situation rather than uses critical thinking. Pavlovian conditioning was a major theme in Aldous Huxley’s dystopian novel “Brave New World”…

The other day a marketer friend of mine asked his friends if he should email his list every day or not. My response was: “Please don’t! There’s too much information being sent around already.”

As it turns out, I seem to be the only person in the group to hold this opinion. Though the majority of answers sounded fairly reasonable as they argued you should only write if you have valuable content to share, they all seemed to agree on the fact that there is nothing wrong with daily mailings. I quote:

“An email a day is the American way!”

and…

“Yes sir! You have to train your list to expect email from you on whatever schedule you determine.”

Though I don’t want to post their names for privacy reasons, these are all very well known guys in the internet marketing arena. They are successful and they have their own coaching programs teaching aspiring marketers how to copy their tactics.

But to be frank with you, I am appaled. Especially that last quote pressed every button in my system.

Did you know that interrupting email and chat is responsible for an estimated $650 billion dollars of economic damage yearly in America alone? Because it takes an experienced computer user an average of 15 minutes to return to “serious mental tasks” after answering e-mail or instant messages. (Source - EN)

And according to the Institute of Psychiatry of the University of London information stress is responsible for lowering our IQ with 10 points on average… (Source - NL)

Personally I don’t want to be in any way responsible for this kind of damage by adding to the information overload. “Treat others the way you like to be treated yourself.” (In fact it’s a major reason why I have been silent for so long…)

And I most certainly don’t want to ‘train my list’ to respond on schedules determined by me.

  • I’d rather you train yourself to keep your mind critical and alert.
  • That you follow up on the goals you set for yourself.
  • That you share happy moments with your family and friends in real life while neglecting your inbox and cell phone.

So when you do hear from me, I intend it to be worth it.

Of course this is just my personal opinion. The fact that I was outnumbered by all to one sure makes me wonder if there’s something wrong with me…

So I’m rather curious to how you feel about these matters - both as a marketer and/or as a consumer.

  • Do you want to (be) mail(ed) every day?
  • Do you want to be trained as a subscriber / train your subscribers?

Let me know!

Thanks for your time,
Patricia

P.S. If you need any help with breaking bad chat habits etc., I recommend - as always - that you start on Simpleology right away!

Happy New Year!

Hey gals,

I’d like to wish you a truly amazing 2007. I didn’t like 2006 myself very much and I sure hope you had a better year. Let’s make the coming year rock!

I’ve been doing a lot of soul searching while taking an extended holiday break and am coming to more final decisions about where I want to focus on next year. This includes trimming down some of my websites to become really easily manageable. My first interest in going online had to do with spreading happiness throughout the internet and that is what I still like doing most. I neglected this forever it seems. Time to feed the soul again!!

I’ve also experienced very ambivalent feelings where internet marketing is concerned. I have never been 100% happy about mainstream ideas in this area else I wouldn’t have initiated this website. But it actually did grow quite worse.

So yesterday I wrote an old-fashioned Nettie rant, only this time I posted it here:

Traffic - Marketing with Integrity?

I hope you don’t feel insulted by me moving it to another blog. I felt I would reach a larger audience this way…

Take care and till soon!

Patricia

Oaks, Birches and Christmas Trees

A family is at the dinner table. The son asks his father, “Dad, how many kinds of boobies are there?

The father, surprised, answers, “Well, son, there’s three kinds of breasts. In her twenties, a women’s breasts are like melons, round and firm. In her thirties to forties, they are like pears, still nice but hanging a bit. After fifty, they are like onions.”

“Onions?”

“Yes, you see them and they make you cry.”

This infuriated his wife and daughter so the daughter said, “Mum, how many kinds of willies are there?”

The mother, surprised, smiles and answers, “Well dear, a man goes through three phases - each like a different type of tree.

In his twenties, he is like an oak tree, mighty and hard. In his thirties and forties, it is a birch, flexible but reliable. After his fifties, it’s like a Christmas tree.”

“A Christmas tree?”

“Yes, dead from the root up and the balls are just decorations…”

This joke was sent to me today by ‘The Willie Man’ - a friend of mine who makes these:

Some like their willies hot...

Nettie Make-Over

I just finished a total make-over of our Inter Netties blog. The previous theme was causing problems in Firefox browsers. For a while I tried to touch up the CSS to make it work, but that was turning out to be a very frustrating job. So I just dumped that theme and set up a new one. It’s based on China Red and I do hope you all like it!!

In addition to the new theme I’ve installed some more plugins to increase visitor value (meaning that our visitors get more value out of the blog as opposed to the IM definition of webowners squeezing more value out of their visitors…):

  • Improved site navigation at the bottom of each page with options to click back to the top or the home page and page navigation.

  • Post categories only show the main topics in the sidebar. When a category is clicked, the related sub-categories become visible.

  • Search form now searches the complete blog including pages. The previous search form only returned results in the same category unless the search was conducted from the home page.

  • Option to print each post/page seperately in printer friendly black and white.

  • Installed a polls plugin to collect both fun and interesting data. Poll results are stored in a database and can be retrieved by all visitors on the polls archive page. Which is currently of course still quite empty as only the first poll is running now…

  • Also included an option to email a post to friends - previously the ‘tell-a-friend’ link would send out a link to the blog index page, leaving the friends to do a search for the part which was actually recommended…

  • And lastly added a bookmark bar to allow social bookmarking of our posts.

Invisible improvements are the installation of plugins to prevent comment spam and trackback spam and a plugin which protects email addresses (should anyone feel like posting one in the comments for example).

If anyone is interested in my personal list of recommended WordPress plugins, please download my WordPress Installation Action Sheets at my Thin Electrons blog.

It’s pretty geeky stuff of course but I now also offer my personal services for anyone who goes into a state of silent shock when faced with php… (This is NOT a free service btw - depending on the state of your blog and what needs customizing you are facing anything between $100 and $1000 a fix! And I only work with WordPress blogs.)

I sincerely hope you enjoy visiting our renewed Inter-Netties.com!

It’s That Time of Year Again…

Posted by Nettie Patricia on December 9th, 2006
Category: Poll of the Month

Anyone noticed an increase in Christmas offers in their mailbox yet? With this holiday approaching rapidly, plenty of marketers begin spitting out special offers for their list members. After all, an amazing amount of money will be spent this month - both online and off-line and many people selling on the internet want to have their share…

Free give-away events are popular too. The best known being Mark Hendricks’ 12 Days of Christmas. But don’t be fooled by the fact everything is free! Though you don’t pay, you do have to sign up for these gifts. So that once you are on the mailinglist, you can be submitted to marketing emails tempting you to buy a product at some point during the coming year.

Nothing wrong with this as a listbuilding technique, as long as everyone is honest about their agenda. Still, I’m curious as to how these give-away events are received. Therefore I created a small poll for the occasion. So if you can spare a minute before surfing on to shopping sites, please take the poll!

How do you like free give-away events?

If you like to comment on this poll, please do so using the commentform. If you cannot see it, click the title of this post so it will display on a single page with the comment form at the bottom.

Thanks!

P.S. Mindy, maybe you could make your excellent ebook available here for those who are downloading lots and lots of free ebooks and such?

Women Rule!

Yesterday was the big election day in the Netherlands - that’s where I live.

I’m not that interested in politics - I get really tired of the amount of time politicians take to discuss and evaluate proposals and therefore don’t seem to get anything done effectively. But there was something which really stood out during the election campaigns…

You know how all the campaign leaders are involved in one debate after the other in the weeks leading up to the election event. Well, this election was no exception and since most of the party leaders are guys, we saw a lot of guys bitching towards each other.

Then 1 evening close to the final elections there was a broadcast company who had arranged a debate between the most important women of the leading parties. BTW - in our country that’s about 7 of them! Quite different from some other countries where it’s only really between 2 or 3 political movements…

Interestingly enough these women took a totally different approach to debating. Instead of the usual bickering the women got straight to the point. Their approach was to acknowledge their different opinions and find some way of coming to an agreement that was respectful of each different viewpoint.

The Netherlands is a democracy so our government represents the opinions of all citizens. What these women were doing strikes me as being much more democratic than what I’ve seen the men do: battle and conquer; power to the winner.

Finding win-win solutions is empowering and inspiring. The resistance drops and action can be taken.

The night before the elections one brave guy announced on TV: “I don’t care which party you vote for, as long as you vote for their women only!”

Hear, hear…

Okay, Nettie Patricia has gotten me interested in tag clouds. I have to admit, I wasn’t sure what the big deal was at first… but they are really quite fun!

I put up a new blog at IMForumTalk and decided to add Tag Clouds to it. It is fun to see them evolve!

I can’t wait to see what they become over time! Thanks for the tip Patricia!

Database Deleted on Accident

Posted by Nettie Patricia on July 10th, 2006
Category: Nettie Chit-Chat

Hey gals,

I’m really sorry but I deleted the database with all posts since March 16th on accident. I don’t understand what happened exactly but somehow the config.php file was still pointing to the old database…

I had the proper configuration file downloaded on my computer after I installed WP on the site (previously we were hosted with a subdomain at marketingfrontline.com). Somehow the old config.php file was uploaded again on March 20th and this went unnoticed.

Today I was cleaning up marketingfrontline.com and deleted all the internetties stuff on here thinking it was totally safe to do so. Not so…

So I’m afraid we only have posts and pages and links and such left from before March 16th. I’m really sorry for all the extra work it is causing and all the posts which were lost.

If you are visiting the site from a link you saw elsewhere and not getting the content you expected to see - apologies again. There is no way to recover these data…

Patricia

Update:

I managed to recover some posts using the cached index from Google. Unfortunately this doesn’t include comments with exception of the recent scam alert which got cached by itself. At least some is back! :-)

WordPress Bloggers - Pay Attention!

Wordpress is of course an awesome blogging script but there’s a serious flaw in its pinging system which can make your blog banned.

In fact, if you are using wordpress blog since a long time then your blog might have been banned and you don’t even know about it…

Clíck below to know what’s that serious flaw and how to protect your blog from getting banned by using a free plug-in at your site:

Goal Setting VS. Dream Getting

Posted by CoachApril on June 10th, 2006
Category: Nettie Chit-Chat

Yes, I realize that the title implies a fight or argument between the two. I purposely wanted to imply that because I have run across so many articles and programs geared toward Goal Setting. What I’ve discovered is that a good part of them are forgetting a very important element … Dream Getting!

Out here in the personal development / self-help arena (where I am located), I hear so much about Goal Setting. Yes, setting goals are important, but they are not the answer to creating the life you want. There are way too many folks who are dependent on Motivational Speakers.

You know who they are … they attend a seminar, come home all fired up and ready to set their goals. Then, inevitably, two days later, two weeks later, or even two months later, their fire has died down to a distant spark and they are right back where they were before attending the seminar.

Sure, there are those very few whose fire hasn’t died and did create the life they wanted.

Now we can say, “They didn’t really want it” or “They didn’t believe they could do it” and that is why they failed. While those are true statements to a point, they surely don’t assist those of us who have really tried and still failed.

I do not believe in Motivational Speakers. Yes, those titles exist, but I don’t believe anyone can motivate anyone else. I do believe we can be INSPIRED by others, but not motivated. Motivation comes from within.

Scarlet O’Hara, the heroine in the story ‘Gone With the Wind,’ was not motivated by the civil war or any person … although their effects inspired her to be a strong, independent woman. There is a scene, where she returns to her southern plantation home, starving, dirty, thirsty. In the barren garden which was once lavishly green and colorful, she states, “I swear, as God as my witness, I’ll never go hungry again.”

And she never did go hungry again, once she got ‘back on her feet.’ She found the motivation within. And that is where you motivation is. It comes from a place inside of you.

Now let’s fast-forward to Dream Getting. Obtaining the Dreams you desire. How does that happen? Let me start by saying it does not start with goal setting. Goal setting is a part of the process, but that is not where you begin.

You begin by being specific and clear about what you want. Just as in any journey, you must know where you want to be. You also must know where you are. Being honest about both can be difficult, however, it is where you must begin. Where you want to be, and where you currently are.

Once you have clearly laid out your destination, then you can work backwards to where you are right now.

Working backwards actually gives you more destination spots. These are not goals. And this is where I see a lot of people confusing the two (goals and dreams).

You will find you may have 3 other destinations or 30 other destinations between where you are now and where you want to be. That’s okay! It does not matter how many you end up with … what matters is that you are able to clearly and specifically define where you are right now and where you want to be.

Once you have laid out (preferably written on paper) your destinations, with them in order from then to now, you will find that you have actually developed your map. You have the direction you want to move forward with.

Now comes the instructions.

The instructions are how you want to be when you arrive at your final destination (your dream life). Will you be happy, honest, trustworthy, generous, etc.? What type of person do you see yourself being? Compare that with the type of person you currently are … such as sometimes honest, more of a taker than a giver, non-trusting, etc. (Again, preferably written on paper.)

Okay, so now you have your destinations and the person you want to be. You also have your current destination and who you currently are. Plus, you have your mini-destinations, which can be compared to those rest stops on the side of the road when you are traveling.

Now comes the goals. A goal is something that needs to be done / completed. It is something you do.

Let’s compare this with walking from your living room to the kitchen. You know you are in the living room (where you currently are), you want to be in the kitchen (where you want to be). In between the two is a bathroom (mini-destination).

You decide that you will skip to the kitchen (how you will get to the kitchen – hey, most people walk so congratulate yourself on doing it your way!}.

In order to skip, you must begin with one of your legs (right or left leg). You decide. Now you are ready to set your goals. Keep the kitchen as your destination in your mind, but keep your eye on the bathroom door (the closest mini-destination).

The first goal is to bring your right knee up.
The second goal is to hop a little bit forward on your left leg.
The third goal is to bring your left leg up.
The fourth goal is to hop a little bit forward on your right leg.
REPEAT THE 4 GOALS UNTIL YOU REAC H THE BATHROOM.

Now, you have made it to the bathroom. You may need to sit down, take a break, breathe…Refocus your attention onto your destination (the kitchen). At this point, you may decide that skipping isn’t going to work very well, or that you just want to try something new. So you decide to crawl like a crab from the bathroom (your new current place) to the kitchen.

The first goal would be to get into the crab position. This is where mini-goals come into play.
Mini-goal one would be bend your knees so your hands touch the floor.
Mini-goal two, slide your hands behind you, so your legs are in front of your arms.
Mini-goal three, bend your elbows so your thighs can rest on your arms.
Mini-goal four, lift legs carefully so you don’t fall
Mini-goal five, put all of your weight on your arms.
Now you are in the crab position. Let’s say you decided to walk sideways with your left side facing the kitchen.

Your first goal would be to lean to the right.
Your second goal is to move your left hand to the left toward the kitchen.
Third goal, lean to the left
Fourth goal, move your right hand to the left toward the kitchen.
REPEAT UNTIL YOU REACH THE KITCHEN.

That’s it! You have made it! You have gotten where you wanted to be … congratulations.

You have to be clear about what you want. Otherwise, your goals won’t make any difference. Imagine if you decided to crab walk, but had no idea where you wanted to go … Talk about confusion!

That is why I want you to become a Dream Getter! Dream Getters make a difference in the world, they obtain everything they want.

Goal Setting is not about the destination.

I have a very big Dream (destination). I focus on the mini-dreams (the places between here and there), always moving forward toward the Dream. What’s wonderful is you can decide to take another route to your dream … there is not just one road. There are many more roads than you can imagine!

And the Obtained Dream (destination} isn’t the key to living a fulfilled life. The destination gives you something to look forward to, to move toward … fulfilled living is in the journey itself.
